Purpose of Marriage: Help God fulfill his plan in your spouse.
So, driving to work one morning I decided to listen to the Family Talk channel on XM.
Now, this happens once every 6 months as I’m not a big talk radio fan. I don’t generally
absorb much through hearing a message and prefer singing along with the radio to get my
day started.
I was listening to a pastor talk about what the true meaning of marriage. He said some
people (I’m sure mostly men) think it’s about sex and finances. He said marriage can
fulfill these two areas, however, are not God’s only purpose for Holy Matrimony. He
said God’s purpose for marriage is to help fulfill HIS plan in your spouse.
I really pondered this during my drive and began to understand what this pastor meant.
We are matched up with our mate to not only love, honor and cherish but to help them be
all that God wants them to be. We are there to help our spouse, keep them focused, keep
them accountable and to be their support in their quest to fulfill God’s will.
I think when we consider God’s view on marriage as opposed to our pre-conceived
notions of marriage; it really puts our relationship with our spouse into a new perspective.
From time to time, we need to look at our spouse the way God looks at them and check
ourselves. Are we truly doing everything we can to help our spouse fulfill everything
God has intended for them? Or do we find ourselves hindering them, holding them back,
being that closed door? We should be opening those doors and doing what we can to
make it impossible for them not to do God’s will.
This past year, my wife Clarissa wanted to be more involved in our new church and
become their youth pastor. This was not just something she “wanted” because it would
be fun but she had a calling from God to become this ministry. I feel from stepping up to
allow her to opportunity to do this through my commitment and support, God has truly
blessed us in numerous ways. Our marriage has continued to grow stronger and God has
shown his favor on us on many occasions.
Give this a try and see what God has in store for your spouse as well as yourself. I think
you will find new opportunities to serve God you were not even aware of.

What a great post. I never thought of marriage in that way. It makes so much sense.
